Alpha Kappa Alpha Celebrates 100 Years

They don't all go to the same school, and they don't all have the same majors. Nor do these women have a city in common. What these ladies do have in common is that they are all members of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Inc. Sorority. This year, Alpha Kappa Alpha, or AKA, celebrates its 100th birthday. To honor this milestone, the ladies of AKA went to Washington D.C. to attend a national conference in July. In Sep. AKA held a regional conference in Michigan. The conferences gave all attending members a chance to meet their sisters, or "sorors", from all over the country. On Jan. 15, 1908, the first chapter of AKA was started in Miner Hall at Howard University in Washington D.C by Soror Ethel Hedgeman Lyle and 8 others. This sorority was the first of it's kind. "Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is the oldest Greek-letter organization established by African American college-trained women," according to the Alpha Kappa Alpha Inc. Sorority website. For member Sequana Tolon, that is an inspiration.

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. raises about $10K for annual pageant

With sleek outfits and gleaning gowns, the sly pageant contestants of the 16th Annual Miss Black and Gold Scholarship Pageant are striving for academic excellence and leading the community. The event, which Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. is a host to, is scheduled to take place at 6 p.m. Sunday in Indiana Memorial Union?s Alumni Hall. ?My goal for this year?s pageant was to put the IU community in the mind set of a high quality program,? said Ian Herron, pageant coordinator. ?Sometimes, as an African-American organization, we are disenfranchised and have a lack of support for some of our programs. That?s something that I wanted to change.? This year?s pageant contestants prepared three months for four categories: introductions, individual talent, group talent and evening gown. ?This is not meant to be a beauty pageant, as our girls also are required to have a 2.7 GPA and also a minimum number of community service hours,? Herron said. Herron said Alpha Phi Alpha and the pageant contestants raised about $10,000 and have received many contributions and support from other campus organizations such as Faculty and Staff for Student Excellence, Groups Student Support Services, Interfraternity Council and former pageant contestants from previous years. ?Besides volunteer requirements for one of my classes, I decided to volunteer to help with the pageant because giving back is something that?s been instilled with me since I was younger,? said senior and Miss Gold 2006 runner-up Charlene Nortey. ?Volunteerism has played a major role though out my life, and I wanted to give back to Bloomington community through that.?

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc participate in the walk for DC AIDS

University student organizations banded with D.C.-area residents in Northwest on Saturday to raise money for AIDS Walk Washington. Pi Kappa Alpha had two goals for the walk: do something positive for the city and improve the image of Greek-letter life on campus, said the fraternity's public relations chair Charlie Rybak. "People have a lot of preconceived notions about Greek life that aren't necessarily true," said Rybak, a sophomore. "We're not just about parties and that kind of stuff - we're also interested in community service and giving back to GW and D.C."
